Charles A. Hartman Fine Art is excited to present A Dream within a Dream, the newest body of work by Portland-based artist Anna Fidler. Fidler's paintings are slow and hypnotic in style and mysterious in plot and conclusion. In her work, forms interact with nature as Victorian silhouettes against the heightened--almost supernatural beauty of the landscape. The figures in these carefully constructed works on paper are rooted in found images and borrowed silhouettes chosen based on form and energy. Additionally, during the making of A Dream within a Dream, Fidler took walks in Portland's Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge, often using the fragmented outlines of trees and reflected water as catalysts for her paintings. The result is a body of work that is exquisite in its imagination, detail and construction. These paintings celebrate the euphoric, rebellious and mythical while consciously contemplating the transformational qualities of ritual and landscape.
Anna Fidler has worked in a variety of media including drawing, painting, film and music. Her work has been exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle and the San Francisco Bay Area. A prior body of work, Vampires and Wolf Men, was shown in solo exhibitions at the Portland Art Museum and the Boise Art Museum. Previous bodies of work were included in both the 2001 and 2006 editions of the Oregon Biennial at the Portland Art Museum. Fidler’s exhibitions have been positively reviewed in Art in America, Artweek and The Oregonian as well as numerous other publications. Anna Fidler received her B.F.A. from the Western Michigan University in 1995 and her M.F.A. from Portland State University in 2005. She currently teaches at the Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland, Oregon. This is her second solo exhibition at Charles A. Hartman Fine Art.
