Charles A. Hartman Fine Art is excited to present Alone Together, the newest body of work by Portland-based artist Eva Speer. Speer’s new work concerns "the contradictory forces of a majesty and rawness outside language and a helpless dependence on the world that has already tamed it." Using industrial materials like acrylic, resin and latex paint, and mechanical processes such as casting and laser-cutting, Speer creates compelling works that blend the organic flow of paint and color with the patterns and processes of machined substrates. Speer infuses these works with a fascination that stops just short of yearning. The result is an intriguing journey that endeavors to fashion something poignant and true from the haze of the everyday.
Speer earned an MFA in painting at Indiana University in 2006, and has exhibited her work in Seattle, Portland, Miami, Utah and Montreal. In 2008, Oregon Public Broadcasting produced and aired anOregon Art Beat segment showcasing her conceptual approach and process. Publications that have recognized Speer's work include Art Ltd., Portland Modern, The Oregonian, Willamette Week, and the blog PORT. In the fall of 2014, her work will be featured as part of the APEX series of exhibitions at the Portland Art Museum. This is her fourth solo exhibition at Charles A. Hartman Fine Art.
