Charles A. Hartman Fine Art is excited to present an exceptional group of portraits of Native Americans by the late 19th century photographer, Frank A. Rinehart. Rinehart was commissioned in 1898 to photograph the Indian Congress held in conjunction with the Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition in Omaha, Nebraska. Afterward, he traveled the West for two years to make further photographs of leaders who had been unable to attend the event. The beautiful resulting portraits depict Native Americans directly and without exotification. Working with an 8x10 view camera, Rinehart's exquisitely crafted platinum prints are both subtle and compelling. They convey the strength and individuality of their sitters while deftly contributing to a larger picture of Native American culture at the turn of the century.
