In celebration of summer and the vibrant cycling community in the gallery’s hometown of Portland, Oregon, Charles A. Hartman Fine Art is pleased to present Pedaling: Bicycle Photographs from Then to Now. For this exhibition, the gallery draws upon its specialized access to 19th and 20th century photographic masterworks, and thematically merges those selections with images from contemporary photographers represented by the gallery. Artists in the exhibition include: Brassaď, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Antonin Gribovsky, Shinsaku Izumi, André Kertész, Nathan Lerner, Herbert List, Wayne Miller and Sabine Weiss, with Corey Arnold, Mark Steinmetz and Issei Suda, amongst others.

Pedaling: Bicycle Photographs from Then to Now is a survey of photographic images that examines our life with, and affection for, the bicycle. Ranging in style from social documentary to modernist abstraction and in impulse from charming to studious, the photographs that make up this exhibition spotlight the many ways in which bicycles are a part of our lives. From transportation to sport to simple fun, this historic and elegant technology continues to play a vital part in our contemporary culture.
