Photographing in Atlanta and its outlying regions, Mark Steinmetz provides his testimony on contemporary American civilization. Combining portraits and landscapes, he weaves a symbolic and lyrical investigation that subtly questions notions of progress. He further develops motifs – on the automobile, on the telephone – that were first introduced in his earlier bodies of work, South Central and South East, and catalogues car culture, fast food, convenience stores, and suburban sprawl. He does so through a lens that is both pensive and compassionate with a empathy that imbues his images with strength and dignity.
Mark Steinmetz lives in Athens, Georgia. He has taught at Harvard, Yale and Sarah Lawrence College, and is the recipient of a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship. His work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art and The Art Institute of Chicago, amongst others. This is the gallery’s second solo exhibition of Mark Steinmetz’s work.
