Charles A. Hartman Fine Art is excited to present Consolation by Portland-based artist Eva Speer. In her work, Speer explores the fine line between one’s static perception of reality and the truth of its continuous evolution. Working agilely amongst various media, she is drawn to conventional, albeit random, imagery—such as house and shelter motifs, shiny objects, scenic vistas and pictures of the cosmos. Speer looks painstakingly at the singular characteristics of each subject. With an openness to capture every nuance she perceives, the work Speer creates as an extension of her sources is as real as it is incredulous, challenging the viewer’s consciousness of their own realities. "My work presents recognizable conventions, perhaps a space removed from the flow of their contexts, which can have the effect of making them seem further exaggerations or caricatures,” Speer shares. “These works do not represent an altered or alternative reality, just one observed and put forth to fend for itself."
Speer earned an MFA in painting at Indiana University in 2006, and has exhibited her work in Seattle, Portland, Miami and Montreal. Oregon Public Broadcasting recently produced and aired an Oregon Art Beat segment showcasing her conceptual approach and process. Publications that have recognized Speer’s work include Portland Modern, The Oregonian, Willamette Week, and the blog PORT. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Portland.
