Charles A. Hartman Fine Art is pleased to present photographs from Eadweard Muybridge’s seminal 1887 series Animal Locomotion, arguably one of the most important bodies of work in the history of photography. For this series, the legendary English photographer (1830-1904) used his 1879 invention of the zoopraxiscope to display in motion the photographs taken with a series of stereoscopic cameras. A groundbreaking technological achievement, the camera allowed projected images to be viewed in rapid succession, documenting objects moving through space in time.  From Thomas Edison’s patent for the motion picture camera, to Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase, to special effects that continue to be advanced in contemporary film, Muybridge’s influence is massive. Animal Locomotion—on view August 6–30, 2008—is an exhibition not to be missed.
