Charles A. Hartman Fine Art is pleased to announce our inaugural exhibition in our new Portland gallery, Camille Solyagua: Collections, including examples of new photographic work from 2006-07 alongside a number of pieces from Solyagua’s exquisite 2003 suite of photograms of spheres. Solyagua will sign copies of her most recent book, Camille Solyagua: Collections 92-06, as well as her 2003 monograph, 4πR2, at the opening reception on August 2nd.

Solyagua’s work combines observation with interaction. Her fascination with the natural world and the fragility of living organisms combines with a curiosity and impulse to catalogue, record and compose, resulting in images that are both beautiful and experimental. In the introduction to Solyagua’s most recent monograph, Karen Sinsheimer, Curator of Photographs at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, writes that Solyagua’s style is “somewhat reminiscent of nineteenth century classifications, though her approach is much more personal, for the objects pictured are an invitation to look closely and appreciate, rather than to classify and memorize … From the intimate significance of single fragments, Solyagua offers a glimpse into the beauties of the world that is neither grandiose nor egocentric but rather, deeply personal and delicate.”
